The cinematography is beautiful. The scenes in the barn were very erotic.

I agree with Melvin, the characters are unilateral and Bertolucci compeled way too many genelarities to advocate his slight sociopolitical points which ultimately drain the movie's realism. And there is no way a movie of this kind can be good if it lacks realism.

Sutherland is undescribable...the way he kills the child in the second part is quite possibly the most brutal thing that's ever been seen in a movie for me. The movie itself is great, though. Not like Once Upon a Time in America.

Great movie, but a bit long

A long, overly pretentious, lackluster wannabe epic. Symbolism abound, but none of it is at all subtle and at 4 hours you wish there was some kind of character to either love or care about.
Bertolucci makes his points early on and then shocks the viewer every so often with a bit of nudity or violence just to keep us interested. Robert DeNiro's worst performance by a mile. If you want to see a great Bertolucci film watch The Last Tango in Paris.

If you have not seen this movie I advise you to see it.Dont be afraid of the 5 hours or even the R-rated 4 hours.But this film is not for the squeimish.The r-rated version is the hardest R-rating a film has ever gotten in my opinion.Even the R-rated version has animals/children being murdered,tons of sex/nudity etc.But the NC-17 version has way more.But this is still a great movie.

One of the most important movies ever made. Every human being should see this monumental tribute to Italy, cinema, music and Comunism. A total masterpiece that combines intimate portraits of politics, love, friendship, hate, envy and a great variety of feelings with scenes of and operatic mood that recalls a Verdi tragedy. A wonderful prose and poetics are combined in this splendorous film. This combination succeed when you can put this movie to politic students and workers and they all feel the same, anger, joy and a menaing of what a social revolution means. When it opened several left wing oriented people criticized the film saying that was very unreal, with time I think that they were angry with Bernardo because he was saying that the change isnon our hands but nobody do anything becuase all liberal bourgeois are a bunch of cowards (like De Niro in the film), maybe Bertolucci included himself in this cathegory but I don't. He's an artist, a true one and he gave the humanity a film to be proud of. The main theme of Morricone has become an hymn to all the proletariat and working people of the world by its own merits. I can wait to see Gli sogniatori from mon oncle Bernardo, one of the last directors that is asking questions about cinema and politics.
