There needs to be much more than 20. One film per director, so I had to drop many favorites by Dreyer, Bresson, Tarkovsky, Kieslowski, etc. It's painful to have left out so many other filmmakers. • www.filmjourney.org • www.mastersofcinema.org •

I love 5, 13 and 18. I'm watching Dekalog, ain't finnished. Like it so far.
2, 11 are both overrated imo. I would like to see 1, 3, 6.

I haven't seen Pather Panchali. What about it do you like better than Apur Sansar? I really like Apur and need to see the other two.

Great, great list! I adore Ordet, Au Hasard Balthazar, 2001, Sansho Dayu (!), The Night of the Hunter, Vertigo, Playtime and Hiroshima mon Amour. And I really NEED to see Pather Panchali, Late Spring and most of EUROPA 51...

Hi nice list you got here.

I've just visited your site www.filmjourney.org and it looks really interesting! I'll go and make sure to check out some of the articles. Thanks

You have an insanely great list - no chance you've got a Top 100 favorites list you might share? (alphabetical or chronological is fine; just ranking a Top 20 strikes me as silly) Cheers.

Fantastic list, although I still have to see some of the films on your list (but hey, I'm only 24 :-)). 'Ordet' is just glorious and would've easily made it to my list instead of Passion de Jeanne d'Arc, but I like Passion even more. Anyway, keep up the great work at MoC!

Hi Doug,
I saw Playtime again late last year, and boy what a movie -- it had totally gonje over my head when I saw it the first time. And I really need to see the Battle of Algiers again. A great list, but very serious -- not one B-movie has snuck in :-)

Wow, what an excellent list! The only one I might disagree with is Umberto D, but your list has a 24.5% affinity with mine.

I just saw Europa '51 again recently on TCM and was overwhelmed by Bergman -it definitely would make my top 25. I chose Muriel over Hiroshima because it's the least known of Resnais's early films, and the editing and performances are so striking. Playtime is great, too, but I want to see it again on a big screen before I decide if it belongs on my list - I bought the Criterion DVD before it went out of stock. Best of all, The Long Day Closes is a masterpiece I can watch over and over again. Davies's cinematic madeleines are unlike any other director. (The voiceover clip from Magnificent Ambersons near the end gives me the chills.) And Ordet at #1 - I remember the first time I saw it and how shaken I was by the resurrection scene.

Great choices.

Outstanding! Brilliant choices - pretty much a perfect list. Many of these films are in my list, or would be if it was extended. The only thing I would question is Pather Panchali.

Very interesting choosing Europa '51 as your Rossellini - is it because of Bergman?

What I love mostly about your list is the choice of Rohmer, DeSica, Tati, Rivette (of course), Pontecorvo and most of all, Davies. All of Davies films are masterpieces, but of them all, only one is available on DVD in the States.

Playtime is due for re-release anytime. Celine is only available as a Non-Subtitled French Region 2 set.

Love to chat.

The Back films were excellent. Regarding Horoki, it's english title is Wanderer's Notebook or Her Lonely Lane, by Naruse Mikio. Based on Kawabata's autobiography, it takes us through her life from late teen to old age. Gorgeous cinemascope (where I believe Naruse really shines in framing) cinematography and an unforgettable score. Probably my favorite Naruse (though this sometimes changes) and I greatly look forward to it being released in August on DVD (thought without subs.)

Les Aventieurs is a french adenture film starring Alain Delon and Lino Ventura. It's well within the confines of genre, but there are seemingly larger more existential aims in the storytelling. Tragic and comic, I listed it as it's a film I can return to again and again. This is available in Russia on DVD and is out of print on DVD in Japan (both without english subs.)

Very interesting list, and it's great to see a Davies film there. By your suggestion via filmjourney.org I'm really looking forward to the Frederick Back DVD set. Thanks again.

Gotta love any list with a Rohmer in the top 10. #20 just came up short on my list (I'm rethinking that one), plus love the Rivette, Bresson, & Ozu choices. All the best...

Ooh, and The Long Day Closes. Shoulda read the whole list before I commented. I have Distant Voices, Still Lives on my list. And we share Tarkovsky and Dreyer as well, though different titles. Malick too, but I chose Badlands.

Great to see Europa 51. As far as I can tell, only 3 of us have listed it.

I read about Ordet and want to watch it after seeing it so high on your list.

Au Hasard Balthazar and Sansho the Bailiff are two films I really, really want to see - but can't find anywhere!

Very cool to see Stalker, 2001, Blade Runner, The Night of the Hunter, Vertigo, Pather Panchali, Late Spring, Days of Heaven, Faces and The Battle of Algiers on here! All of those I think are absolute masterpieces!
