To Live and Die in L.A. has a great car chase, but it gets worse and worse as it goes. By the end of the movie it's just awful

Nikita is da bomb, also I agree that First Blood was a bloody good film, pity it was downed by the crap sequels, like many other great films.

Superb list! I recently watched Heat, was blown away and also put it in my top 20.

George, I don't think the point of Gattaca is that the brother is weaker than Vincent (Ethan Hawk), but rather that Vincent had the stronger will. So the point of the film *is* that the discrimination is wrong, that by eliminating certain genetic traits, we might very well be sterilizing the human race. The science is able to create a healthier population, but by placing too much weight on genetic perfection, it under-values the human spirit.

The problem with Gattaca is that its science is a straw man that it then knocks over. If the brother is really weaker than Ethan Hawke's character, well, that's just bad science. Everyone would argue against bad science. But how about the discrimination being wrong even if the science is right; then the movie is presenting a challenge. Anyway, John Woo's The Killer better be on your best action films list.

Michael, I am a sci-fi fan, to be sure. However, just to clarify, this isn't my list of the 20 best films of all time -- it's my list of 20 best science fiction films. I thought it would be fun to do a themed list. As soon as I have the time to compile a new list, I plan to put up my vote for 20 best action films.

You wouldn't happen to be a sci-fi fan, would ya?

I have got to disagree with R.A. López about Gattaca. The whole point of the Movie is what happens between the brothers at the end of the film. The human spirit triumphing over oppression/science/machine is encapsulated in Vincent's final comments to his brother Anton

Solaris and Stalker are both good, too. Too bad there are only 20 spots available. ; ) Thanks for the comments, everyone. I figure it's about time to start on a new list -- maybe top action films this time...

Gattaca was headed for greatness... until that ridiculous moment when Loren Dean and Ethan Hawke reveal their kinship and then, the horror, go at another swimming competition. Talk about a letdown. Your list could use Tarkovsky's Solaris or Stalker.

You really like sci-fi.
I do too.
Gattaca is very underrated.

I thought I'd offer up a themed Top 20 list. This time around, Science Fiction (fantasy saved for another time).

As always, this is my opinion of the top films at this instant. In five minutes I may change my mind...
