Where's the middleground
The Shawshank Redemption is a fairly good movie. However, let me eccentuate the FAIRLY good. There may be many who genuinly like this movie but I believe those people are the viewers who simply enjoy a nice movie rather than those who want to appreciate the artisitc nature of films. While they may like the movie I believe that those who label it as a masterpiece are ignorant of the cinematic aspects that make a great film. For example, I personally didn't like Citizen Kane but I still recognize that it's a masterpiece because of it's innovative qualities. Also, I believe that those reviews that give Shawshank a 1/10 are equally ignorant because they are overly opinionated and only wish to bash the movie. If you're looking for a decent movie to watch for entertainment then The Shawshank Redemption will surely satisy. However, it isn't a masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination.

Note : 6/10

Points forts :
A warm hearted movie with plenty of emotional depth. A good movie for those who just wish to sit down and enjoy a movie.

Points faibles :
The directing and acting are often mediocre. The film doesn't accomplish anything extrodinary on an artisic level.

Cheap sentimentalism for passive viewers
I could write a book (maybe a Pulitzer price winner) on why The Shawshank Redemption (and Titanic for that matter) isn't artistic. I'll just give you a few reasons, methodically exposed:

1. The performances lack reality. Morgan Freeman seems such a damn self-righteous clichéd modern saint. Even Joan of Arc had doubts and internal conflicts. In Freeman's character, such inner struggles are absent.

2. The characters in the prison are completely stereotyped (like the cruel guard, the low-profile prison inmate who escapes, the Buddha-like character who helps others in prison, the seemingly calm character who commits suicide or goes wild...)

3. The story seems constructed and artificial. Not to mention the stereotype of the guy who's unfairly judged and faces amazing perils, to reach redemption at the end.

4. The film continously appeals to sentimentalist feelings in the audience, with the use of music, scenery and mise-en-scene. I've always said that a film that can't affect the viewer's feelings DIRECTLY, has to use any tool at hand. And the atmosphere, unfortunately, suits that purpose.

Additionally, many people say they like this movie, because this movie makes them feel "good". Duh?! That's precisely what films like this (and Titanic) are looking for (and millions of dollars are spent in that attempt). They seek to obtain easy feelings from not very critical viewers.

Note : 1/10

Points forts :
Tough one...

Points faibles :
All the aforementioned.

Avis de Ben Schmitt
The Scrimshaw Reduction
Like omg, dis movie suks so hard. I just think its to sentimentals and moving to be a prison film. The characatures are not that good, like they have weaknesses and stuff which I dont like about people cause its not realistic and stuff, cause you gotta be strong to survive and stuff. And cept for the escape I could hardly hear the music which i dont like cause i like to notice the music in movies all the time cause thats kool and this wasnt like that.

Note : 1/10

Points forts :
lol, the ending, lol, lol, hehe, haha.

Points faibles :
I got no boners except for the beggining when Andy was having sex with his wife lol, lol.

Lucifer Sam wrote on 7 may 2008:

"So I asked this girl I really like, spent around $200 on prom tickets, tux rental and other assorted preparations, spent a month getting really pumped up and excited, and then she spent prom night largely ignoring me in favor of her friends. On the one hand, I was understandably pissed, but I'm mostly just depressed that she really doesn't seem to like me that much. However, being a glutton for punishment, if I don't have to work (and if I can work up the nerve) I'm going to ask her to see a movie with me this weekend. She'll either find my persistence endearing or annoying, and although I suspect it will be the latter, I figure I might as well keep trying."

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA !!!!!
