Michael Scrutchin:

This is insanity. Aside from my top five, the rankings are pretty arbitrary and there are way too many painful omissions. My list will never feel right to me. Ever. But I love all these films, I really do, so that's that. (Updated Nov. 15, 2003.)

Aside from PDL, I dig this list. Band of Outsiders is next up on my Godard queue, and I love Notorious, though there are a few Hitchcock flicks I'd put ahead of it and Vertigo. I love City Lights to pieces. I'd be curious to hear some extended thoughts on Heavenly Creatures; I liked it but I found it a bit stagey at times. And who can argue with Pulp Fiction and Mulholland Drive?

Man, back when MULHOLLAND DR. came out, you weren't kidding about loving it. Nice, eclectic list (those are the best).

I saw Notorious and Touch of Evil for the first time recently and loved the hell out of them. They might find a place on my list with time.

Great list, Michael. I agree about D&C, but I decided to limit myself to 1 film per director (one way of narrowing it down to 20), and went with Before Sunrise.

Yeah, I love D&C. Quentin Tarantino included it in his Sight & Sound top 10, which was cool. But I also love Richard Linklater's Before Sunrise almost as much as D&C. And I'm not really gaga over Waking Life, even though many critics and film buffs would probably say it's Linklater's best film.

Great list Mike! Nice to see D&C ranked so high as I think it's a fantastic flick...that didn't make my Top 20. ;)
