RIGHT on with Flesh and Bone my friend. This is truly one superb list that includes everything and Blow-Out is my favorite DePalma film too. I have to question The Long Kiss Goodnight, but other than that, I am very very impressed. Used Cars: HYSTERICAL!

White Hunter is a great movie. It has always had a more emotional effect on me then Unforgiven. I have been rethinking Blake Edwards work from the 80s and they are much better then I thought they were when I saw them originally.

Dawn of the dead! That was a classic. Also good to see Alien high on your list.

MANHUNTER is 10 times better than the weak RED DRAGON!
william Petersen and tom Noonan give great performances;a cold and haunting movie(i especially like the scenes between tom Noonan and joan Allen, with this beautiful soundtrack by Shriekback:"this big hush" and "coelocanth").
i think michael Mann is my favourite director, quite underrated(the moving and beautiful ALI,the unrecognized THE KEEP...and i would like to see THE JERICHO MILE!).

Anil,

I'm not too hot over the majority of Harlin's films, but I felt with the help of Shane Black's wonderful script, he made a film of dazzling and imaginative brilliance. It's over-the-top yet phenomenally well-controlled at the same time; it's kind of what was attempted with Hudson Hawk, only it's not uncouth -- the action's organic and cohesive, and the characters are all vivid and grounded.

As for Q&A, I agree that it's similar to other Lumet films, but I felt his previous New York crime-and-corruption films (even Serpico) were disjointed and rambling. Here, all of the many characters and subplots fit beautifully together, and it handled the subject of racism very well -- as well as anything in, say, a Spike Lee film. Like Manhunter, I didn't dig it too well the first time; but when I re-watched it, it plays out a lot better.

Thanks for the comment!

I didn't like Manhunter when I first saw it. Then, after SIlence of the Lambs (grossly overrated), I gave it another look and was amazed at just how keenly analytical it was. It doesn't spell out everything for you; the audience is required to pay attention and remain as immersed in the plotting as the hero. As for Once Upon a Time in America, it's now available on DVD, and I cannot wait to get my hands on it, to see it in its original theatrical aspect ratio.

Being that you and I have a tendency to disagree about so many films, it's good to see we can see eye to eye occasionally.

Hi Jack. I like a lot of titles here but Q&A? Why? Apart from Nolte's riveting performance and Lumet's sometime amusing script, the film was nothing more than what had gone before it. Corruption, deceit, violence where the righteous don't win. Sound familiar? So what does it for you? Is "Blind Date" the Bruce Willis film? What is it about Long Kiss Goodnight that you liked? I have to admit that I don't like any Renny Harlin films, they bore me! Cliffhanger, Die Harder, Cutthroat Island, Long Kiss...lots of action, but the storytelling and dialogue leave a lot to be desired. It's almost as if he paints by numbers. I know he doesn't write them, but is this just coincidence? I wonder what Geena Davis saw in him!! :-) btw, if you reply on your page, please say so on my page otherwise I won't know about it! Cheers!

New you'd make it here sooner or later, Sommersby! I really dig your list, pal - and apparently I really need to see Q&A again! ;)
