I love Jean de Florette much more than Manon des Sources, though Manon is certainly a must-see follow-up for a better perspective of the main characters. I would argue it's Depardieu's best performance ever.
P.S. I also love both La Gloire de mon père and Le Château de ma mère.

Jean De Florette was one of those big French productions of the 1980s - but the money was all well spent. The performances are all top notch - Depardieu, Montand and Auteil all prove their worth in this southern tale of greed and sin. An extended cut of the two films was made - but has not seen the light of day except on French TV back in the late 80s. As far as I can recall, these cuts expanded on the film's narratives giving some subplots more prominence. Here's hoping we'll get to see them again some day.

Hello there,I have loved this movie ever since I first saw it 15 years back. However when u try and show others the magic dissapears slightly. The first half hour is very slow and the rest is unerringly downbeat.
Although Manon des Sources is more 'up' I've only watched it twice whereas I've seen Jean maybe 30 times. For some reason it doesn't have anywhere near the same attraction.Maybe it's because the whole is neater and more Hollywood than the first.
My Mother's Castle and My Father's Glory are 2 films worth seeing about the author of Jean de Florette.
They do make u want a little summer house in the hills with only the scent of the herbs and chirping cicadas for company..sighhhhhhhhh.
