Nick Wrigley:

May 2004 - Just added THE RED AND THE WHITE and L'HUMANITE. I'd like to add more from those above, plus Dovzhenko, Kurosawa, Hitchcock etc. I chose the films that rise up like bubbles in my mind when I think "cinema".

This list blows me out of the water, promptly selling me a Spongebob beach towel made out of precious metals...I will now have to see L"humanite and Red and the Black...also, I should have included Spirit of the Beehive on my list, but I am still haunted by my pervert uncle and his frisky bee costume...not to mention, Gertrud edged out Ordet on my list, if only for the subtle diss of my homie Kierkegaard.

This is the most pretentious list I've ever seen. One fag movie after another.

hi nick love the list. You have the most affinity with me. Good luck with MoC. I always try to buy your release though I live in Indonesia. Keep up the great work, and bring something more like Bara no Soretsu.

Matthew, if you haven't heard of most of these films you must be living in a cinematic cave ... time to come out and enjoy the sunshine.

Other than Tokyo story and Sansho Dayu, I haven't heard of any of these movies.

Cool list.
Love that you put Au Hasard Balthazar so high. And a lot of Tarkovsky. Really would want to see more of his films.

Please check my list. Maybe you can share what other films I can watch. I'm a bit stuck because I don't know what to buy next.

Kudos on the continuing quality of MoC releases Nick.

Your list's not really my bag (apart from 39,10,11,14.) I need to see more though.

I do share your enthusiasm for Dumont though. L'humanite is a masterpiece. Can't wait to see Flandres. I can't believe Romney's stance on him, (polarizing indeed) especially when he praises third rate Tarkovsky/Angelopolous imitators like Ceylan (that might be a bit harsh but it's not far off the mark).

too academic? --- How can someone's list of favourite films be "too academic"? They're my favourites and they're weren't compiled in order to appeal to the lowest common denominator. I'm sorry, but writing "too academic" on the list of someone's favourite films is the mark of an idiot.

I really like 3, 14 and 18. I would love to see 1, 4, 5, 8, 9, 11 and 13. I didn't like 2 or 10.

I obviously need to see Pompoko! I'd forgotten you'd got 2 Mizoguchi films in your top 10 (and at Senses of Cinema too?) and that your list was so full of "transcendental" greats; no complaints of course. My 4 favourite directors- Mizoguchi, Tarkovsky, Renoir, Ozu- extremely well represented. Any latest news on future Mizo and Naruse dvd releases in UK?

Magnificient list here. Many folks place Au hasard Balthazar in their top 5. I currently wait for my order. Just can't wait. Dreyer is one of the greatest director in the history of cinema. Wonderful list.

Excellent list.

Great, informed, erudite list. If there are any films on here that I do not love, it is because I have yet to see them. My only quarrel with the list is that for such an international collection of films, there are no Italian titles.

A lot of intersting choices here. The only one I am not fond of is Ordet.
