This is that rarest of things, a Mike Leigh film that's actually warm & witty. Stand-out performances from the magnificent Jim Broadbent, Allan Corduner and Timothy Spall; the movie also features a neat combination of lush costumes/theatrical settings and the reality of behind-the-scenes Victorian life - the theatre is a microcosm of a stilted, class-bound society (so it's not so different to Mike Leigh's other films after all...).
