I think it can easily be viewed as escapist (no pun intended) entertainment but there's no question, underneath it is a compassionate character study. If there's a film that could sway people that like stupid Hitchcock mystery shit to the side of a more personal and humane cinema then this is definitely it.

I agree. This is NOT an action movie. The escape serves merely as a means for something deeper and more fulfilling.

It's ridiculous that this masterpiece hasn't been picked up by Criterion yet!!!

My favorite Bresson. The last ten minutes really prove how effective his technique can be; I was biting my nails the whole time.

Might be Bresson's most powerful and redeeming masterpiece. His most pure cinematic experience is the sublime Pickpocket. Bresson's use of music in both films is mesmerzing.

Not Bresson's best film but certainly his most accessible. If you haven't seen anything by the Master check this one out first.

Bresson's minimalism find the perfect setting. Calling it an 'escape movie' is a commercial tag that doesn't apply here. Just don't expect a french version of "The Great Escape". I truly believe this is one of cinema's essential movies.
